Website Design
Project | 03
Executive Summary

When learning with technology, it is imperative to have a centralized place to house and disseminate information. A website is often one of the easiest ways to achieve this. The Website Design course focuses on the primary principles involved in user interface (UI) design, user experience (UX) design, accessibility guidelines, and basic coding to create a website. For this project, I chose to redesign the site of a local screenwriting group using Wix. The original site was difficult to navigate, and readability was impossible on certain pages. During the design and development of the site we used the design thinking model which included:
-
Emphasize
-
Define
-
Ideate
-
Prototype
-
Test
The artifacts provided reveal images of the final website. I expanded the navigation offerings of the site and organized key information by page. The other artifact displays the results of usability testing. The testing was instrumental in determining key issues with the site before it was available for launch.
For this website design project, I chose to add artifacts to my portfolio that displayed the diversity exemplified by the participants in the usability testing. The participants were selected because they represented a broad cross-section of potential users and come from diverse backgrounds. This is key in setting ethical standards when it comes to designing products for consumer use. It was important for me to have diverse perspectives and feedback to ensure I did not miss any blind spots.

Personal Reflection

This project proved to be one of my most challenging and rewarding. The website I originally planned to redesign was for a small film company that offered screenwriting workshops. However, the business owner didn’t have a clear direction for the business and wanted time to redevelop the business strategy before moving forward. I ended up using a site I used for research when contemplating the original site. Prototyping helped save valuable time during the development phase and usability testing helped avoid costly mistakes. Lessons from this course have been applied to the creation of this very site.
